ITINERARY (Short Description)

1st. Day: Arrival in Aracaju.  Transfer to Estância. Overnight in Estância.
2nd. Day:
AM: Birding  in Estância. PM: Drive to  Jeremoabo. Overnight in Jeremoabo.
3rd. Day:
 Drive from  Jeremoabo to Canudos. Arrival in Canudos by lunch time. PM: Birding in Canudos. Overnight in Canudos.
4th. Day:
  Drive to  Crato with birding in route. Arrival in Crato by  dinner time. Overnight in Crato.
5th. Day:
   AM + PM: Birding in Crato. Overnight in Crato.
6th. Day:
AM and PM: Birding in Crato. Overnight in Crato.
7th. Day:
 Drive   from Crato to  Maceió or to Quebrangulo & Murici ( Post-Tours)

Day-by-Day Itinerary


1st.  Day
:
Arrival at the airport of the city Aracajú, at the State of Sergipe.Arrival in Aracajú ( The name Aracajú,  means “macaws on the cashew nut tree”). Meeting the local guide. Transfer to our lodge, with birding in route: Snail Kite, White-headed Marsh-Tyrant,  Black-legged/Wing-banded Hornero,  Cattle Tyrant and Magnificent Frigatebird. Arrival at our hotel at the county of Estancia  (75km/ 45 miles South  Aracaju) . Check in. Optional beach walk.  Dinner( Sea Food) . Field Checklist Track(F.C.T.).Overnight.

2nd. Day:  Early breakfast.   Full morning birding the remanescents areas of Atlantic Forest in the in county of Estancia – The very rare Fringe-backed Fire-eye has been seen here!  As well, other fantastic birds too, such the  Red-shouldered Macaw, Golden-capped Parakeet, Golden-tailed Parrotlet, Blue-backed & White-bearded Manakin, Stripe-necked Tody-Tyrant and  Pale-bellied Tyrant-Manakin. Not far, from here  there is an  area with potential for Brazilian Teal, Plain-bellied Emerald and Bicolored Connebil, as  well, migrant shorebirds such the Whimbrel .Lunch. Drive to Jeremoabo, with chances for White-naped Jay, and Cactus Parakeet. Dinner. FCT. Overnight in Jeremoabo.

3rd. Day: Early Breakfast. Check out. This morning we will be birding along the dirty  road from Jeremoabo to Canudos, with great possibility of having the very rare Lear’s Macaw. Since it is a dirty road, we will be very easy to make lots of  stops to watch other birds such the White Monjita, Spot-backed Puffbird, Pectoral Antwren and Red-legged Seriemas. Arrival in Canudos by lunch time. Check in. Lunch. PM:Birding  the Caatinga  & observation of the Lear’s Macaw, returning to their roost at the end of the day. After Sunset, we will look for the Scissor-tailed Nightjar. Dinner. FCT.  Overnight in Canudos.

4th Day:
  Day travel to Crato, with birding stops, with possibilities for White-bellied Nothura,  Great Wag tailed Tyrant &  lunch along the route. Arrival in Crato by the end of the day.Check in  Dinner FCT. Overnight in Crato.

5th. Day: Early Breakfast. This morning we should have as a top priority “La Crème de la Crème”) – The ARARIPE MANAKIN.  Every country, surely, gets proud when a new specie of bird is found within its territory – In this case the pleasure came in double: Besides this bird being discovered just about 10 year ago, it one of the most beautiful Brazilian birds!  Be ready to a moment of great excitement!!!
But, the show has to go on, so after enjoying the Araripe Manankin, as much as we can, making sure that every tour participant had great looks on him, we will continue our birdwatching tour in the Crato Country, visiting the upper part of a tableland, which is a very nice Forest Reservation. There we will be looking for:  White-browed Guan, Blond-crested Woodpecker, Rufous-breasted Leaftosser, Great Xenops, Spotted Piculet, White-browed Antpitta, Red-shouldered Spinetail, Black-bellied Antwren, Caatinga Barred Antshrike, Ash-throated Casiornis and Gray-eyed Greenlet. Planalto Hermit, Sombre Hummingbird, Versicolored Emerald and Stripe-breasted Starthroat ,  Planalto Tyrannulet, Fuscous Flycatcher,  Cinnamon Tanager and Flavescent Warbler. Since we shall stay long enough in the field this afternoon, we may be able to watch also  the  Common Potoo & Rufous Nightjar. Dinner. FCT. Overnight in Crato.

6th Day: Early Breakfast. During this day, we will be birding looking for possible missing birds of the previous day. It shall be a day with an easy pace which will allow us to learn more about this particular region of Brazil. Dinner. FCT. Overnight in Crato.

7th. Day:  Drive from  Crato to  Maceió ( End of the Tour).  OR to Quebrangulo & Murici ( Post-Tours).

Accomodation: We will be using the the best hotel/lodges for each place. Having every room a private WC & Hot Shower (Canudos might be an exception).

Transportation: We will use only vehicle equipped with Air Conditioning & enough space to give each guest a window seat.

2 – SERRA DO BATURITÉ

1st Day: Arrival in Fortaleza. Drive to Mulungu. Overnight in Mulungu.

2nd Day: Full day Birding at the Serra do Baturite

3rd Day:  Full day Birding at  Serra do Baturité

4th Day:  Drive back  to Fortaleza/  Flight Homewards or Extension to Fernando de Noronha.


SERRA DO BATURITÉ Target Birds:

Rufous (Caatinga) Gnateater,  Grey-breasted Parakeet,  Gould’s Toucanet, White-throated Spadebill, Ochraceous Piculet,. Band-tailed Manakin, Buff-breasted Tody Tyrant, Spot-winged Wood-Quail, Rufous-breasted Leaftosser and Spot-winged Wood-Quail.

The Serra de Baturité is a unique range of hills, not quite like the Chapada do Araripe; the vistas are less stark and the forests even lusher. If it weren’t for the mountains, this whole area would be desert, but the highlands create their own rains, forming a habitat that supports some birds we won’t see elsewhere, especially  Spot-winged Wood-Quail.

 

3 – RECIFE & FERNANDO DE NORONHA ISLAND

We are glad in offering you a great combination : Recife and Fernando de Noronha.
In Recife you may watch the Racket-tailed Coquette and the Pearly Parakeets* and in Fernando de Noronha, besides some great Sea Birds such Black Noddy, Brown Noddy , Sooty Tern,  Fairy Tern, Masked Booby, Brown Booby, Red-footed Booby; Magnificent Frigatebird and  Red-billed Tropicbird.
You may get TWO Brazilian Endemics: Noronha Vireo and Noronha Elaenia!!!

You may spend time in Recife, either in your way to Fernando de Noronha or in you way back. The price, sent by request, would be the same.

ITINERARY:

1st Day: Arrival in Recife. Meeting your local guide. Depending at the time of your flight arrival you could take, on the same day a flight to Fernando de Noronha.
In case, you need an overnight in Recife, then, you will be taken to your hotel. PM: Search for the Racket-tailed Coquette & Pearly Parakeets. Return to the hotel. Dinner. Overnight. In case, you go to Fernando de Noronha Island, after the check in at you lodge, you can either choose a break or a bird  walk with your guide

2nd Day and 3rd.:  These will be two days in Paradise!!! Bring your camera – It will be great photo opportunities. A boat ride will be also part of the activities.
You can’t miss the endemics !!!
Sea Food is very good – But, other types of meals are available too!

4th Day:  Flight to Recife. Connection Homewads. Or, upon request, we could offer you an overnight in Recife. Just let us know**…

*Pearly Parakeets: They are originally from the Amazon Forest. But, a flock has been released in Recife.

FERNANDO DE NORONHA ISLAND Target Birds

Noronha Vireo, Noronha Elaenia, Noronha Dove.
Seabirds:  some of the largest colonies of tropical Atlantic seabirds are found on the Fernando de Noronha islands, with large numbers species including the Black Noddy, Brown Noddy , Sooty Tern,  Fairy Tern, Masked Booby, Brown Booby, Red-footed Booby; Magnificent Frigatebird and  Red-billed Tropicbird.
The Fernando de Noronha islands have two endemic species of reptile, the mabuia Mabuya maculata and the two headed snake Amphisbaena ridleyana.
The marine environment off these islands is of particular interest. Two species of marine turtles are common in the nearshore waters, the green turtle Chelonia mydas (EN A1abd), and the hawksbill turtle Eretmochelys imbricata (CR A1abd+2bcd ). The former of these breeds in the islands. A resident population of the spinner dolphin Stenella longirostris (LR/cd), numbering up to 1,200 individuals occur in the surrounding waters, and many other cetaceans are regular visitors to the islands.
